The Challenge: A new system that promotes anxiety literacy among young students, students with special needs, caregivers and educators. At the heart of this system is a character, acting as a friendly, memorable guide.
The Solution: I illustrated and designed the character 'Bean' to be lovable, emotive, efficient, and free of identity labels (like gender or age) that might restrict relatability. Simple facial features offered endless possibilities, long stretchy limbs allowed for exaggeration, and a hint of blush added an extra layer of human depth. Bean's testing showed a solid outline was important for visually impaired children. This soft round shape is comforting and huggable, and a subtle pencil texture adds an imperfect child-like quality. Bean also needed to be efficient – as 72 variants were required in just 2-3 weeks. An illustration guide was created for future illustrators, and after Bean came a series of illustrations where children could identify emotions and use them as a learning tool.

Results: This project won Gold at the Better Future Design Awards.
